Conversations with Ourselves, Memories of Earthlight
Robert C. Morgan
There are two things to consider while looking at the paintings of Young Ho Seock : one, they inform the eye through color and light; and two, they inform the mind through tactile sensation and feeling. In fact, light and touch are both forms of sensation. The retina feels bright light coming in as the hand feels the sensation of earth and minerals in the process of mapping the surface.
As a painter, Young Ho Seock uses color to produce his own form of light, and in producing light, he provides us with a sense of form. The artist’s hand is not merely an afterthought, but is a sign that reveals the evidence of painting, or painting conceived as an action in time and space. Young Ho Seock invents the surface, re - arranges it, in ways that allow the paint to come alive. The color is applied and re - applied layer upon layer, embedding light into the surface that provides an aura of illumination.
Before the advent of electronic light, the human eye perceived light differently than we do today. Until the beginning of the twentieth century, light was a fact of nature, and through nature, color came into art by way of minerals found in the soil. The soil was the source of color, which had the capability of recreating light through an illusory means on canvas. Seock is less interested in creating illusion than in giving the viewer the actual feeling of the earth through the sensation of light and touch. This means that the trace of his fingers registers an imprint of a human hand, a gatherer who has gone into nature and brought back specimens that bring color and light his paintings.
It is curious that Seock works in a relatively small-to-medium scale.
This allows a sense of intimacy, focus, and concentration. When the pigment is an all - over blue pigment, the visual experience is different from that of viewing a charcoal or red surface. Similarly, one might say that green is different than pyrite. When the cluster of tactile energy is pulled into the center of a painter, the experience is different from an empty space where the elliptical cluster of energy resides inside the pigment pulled toward the exterior frame. Our understanding of these paintings is contingent on knowing the colors used by Young Ho Seock come directly from the earth. Therefore, the light that resides in these colors is earthlight, not a simulated form of light, produced by an electrical current.
The importance of these paintings should be clear to anyone who endures the various forms of simulation that have dissuaded us from a way of living removed from the origins of our humanness. As we have removed ourselves from nature, we have paid the price, which has led to diminishing returns in our ability to see our motivations and to recognize what is happening around us. Our sensory ability toward the importance of touch in relation to nature has also diminished, and has out ability to recognize the feel of objects, animals, plants, and other human beings.
As art has in some ways come closer to life, it has more to teach us. By seeing color and light and by arbitrating the artist’s sense of tactility, we are permitted to perceive our reality more clearly – with greater fortitude and solace, with an ability to move more easily in relation to thought and perception, Seeing beyond our selves, and hearing more than our own echo.
The earthlight paintings of Young Ho Seock have much to teach us, and in the process of teaching us, we have another kind or relaxed enjoyment – the presence of color of light in our everyday lives, the focus on being in a world connected to nature, rather insisting on positioning ourselves apart from it.
I believe this is what the artist Young Ho Seock means when he titles his paintings ¡°Conversations.¡± His paintings give us the opportunity to have a conversation with ourselves and to move in a direction closer to our instinctive memory of

Qiurui Du
Qiurui Du is an artist from Beijing, China and is currently based in New York City. Having grown up in an
artistic family his love of art grew tremendously. Queer identity and life experience give Qiurui unique
point of views and inspirations in art. As an introverted persons, he expressed all his emotions and
ideas through colors and images, and he believes art is a way to tell stories. In Qiurui’s work, he
deconstruct his inner fears, love, and Chinese pop cultures, and the subject matter in Qiurui’s artworks
is also inspired by his surroundings as well as daily experiences within the social framework. He creates
corny scenarios with bright colors and flat images to bring the viewers into an illusionary dimension,
where reality and imagination have been combined. In the Qiurui’s recent solo exhibition “A Bizarre
World” (May, 2018), he has explored his childhood memories in his hometown Beijing with the
particular attention to the social conflict and pop cultures that were influenced by China’s tremendous
development and used acrylic to create a colorful imaginary world with black senses of humor to
address the social issues, such as environmental problems, the conflict between poor and rich, and
traditional Chinese life style in Modern Chinese society.

Artist Statement
My childhood memory is blurry and mysterious because many details are gone with time. Beijing is my
hometown, but sometimes I feel it’s slowly becoming a different city. Whenever my mom had to travel
to other places, she always liked to bring me with her. I had a great opportunity to see the world with
my own eyes. However, as an introverted person, books and films became my best friends when I was
young. I built an imagined world around myself. No matter where I am, Beijing still has a special place
in my heart. The speed of the development in China is really fast. Whenever I go back to China, new
skyscrapers have been built, and old Hutongs haven’t been torn down. Then I realized that my
hometown has changed, and the memories of my childhood there could only live in my heart. In my
artwork, I have explored my childhood memories with the particular attention to the social conflict and
Chinese pop culture that was influenced by China’s tremendous development. China changes every day,
it’s too fast, and it’s hard to catch up with the changes. The disconnection between myself and Chinese
society made me think about the question, is Beijing the one changed or is me? China is a strange land;
it’s old and new, westernized but still traditional. Sometimes nothing makes sense in nowadays Chinese
society. Looking back; my childhood is the most bizarre dream I’ve ever had. In my work, I deconstruct
my inner fears, the impact of Chinese culture, and my life experiences. My subject matter also is
inspired by my surroundings as well as daily experiences of my childhood to address the social issues,
such as environmental problems, the conflict between poor and rich, and the traditional Chinese
lifestyle in modern Chinese society. Maybe my childhood is a combination of reality and my fantasy, and
I’m a dreamer who dreams in a bizarre world.

* Biography
Born in Madrid in 1965, aged 11 José Molina started attending several arts schools, then, while studying at Madrid’s University of Fine arts, he worked in advertising until the age of 35, when he decided to fully devote himself to painting. His first exhibition was in 2004 at Milan’s Galleria Rubin. Between 2005 and 2010 he held a solo exhibition at Milan’s Museum of Science and Technology and Civic Aquarium - curated by renowned art critic and historian Vittorio Sgarbi - and exhibited at other locations and galleries, like Galleria Ca’ di Fra’, Mc2, Fondazione Stelline and Fondazione Mudima. 2013 was a year of great solo and collective shows for Molina; his works were exhibited at Milan’s Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Spazio Oberdan and La Triennale. His first anthological exhibition took place in 2014 at Real Academia de España in Rome, in 2015 he released the volume “Humanitas”, a comprehensive collection of the artist’s production from 2002, and in 2016 he held a solo show at Museo del Mare in Genoa and at Galleria Deodato Arte in Milan. In 2017 at the Royal Palace in Caserta, took place a big anthological exhibition “Landscape after the battle” supported by the Spanish institutions and by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism. Today Josè is present on the international scene, both in Europe and Asia, with a series of solo exhibitions both in private and public spaces. He now lives in Gravedona, Lake Como.
*Artist’s Statement
I am a child of my time.
Spanish, born in the mid ‘60s, I grew up with the consequences and remnants of Franco’s totalitarian regime, which in part contributed to shaping my artistic path, along with my social and cultural commitment.
I see art as a tool for interaction and, as an artist, I feel I have a
responsibility for what surrounds me. But my art does not merely tell of the human being in his social dimension. At the start of the year 2000, I decided to undertake a cathartic journey within myself. I gave up a solid career in advertising to devote myself to art completely.
My first collection, ¡°Morir para vivir¡±, is the metaphor of the path I have
undertaken. Knowing myself prodded me to delve deeper into the various aspects of human nature, hence the introspective investigation started being accompanied by an anthropological one. I have chosen a photographic technique, with a documentary intent in order to make my characters look as real as possible: if they were not so real, we would feel more detached towards them.
My paintings also feature unsettling elements, which draw away from
reality and make my works look more visionary and surreal. This allows me to explore humanity in depth, I use surrealism as a tool to investigate, as the language of hidden truths. This visionary, at times fierce, character is not meant as a provocation, but to prompt the spectator to venture into the multifaceted nature of the human soul, to trigger a reflection.

Lorenzo Cascio, sculptor and painter, was born in Sicily in 1940. He lives and works in Portofino.
He was a teacher of sculpture at the school of the Art until 1983. He figures in the most important
books of the year, encyclopedias and publications of national and foreign art.
He started very young as a ceramist in Sciacca, his native town, creating a school which brought
back the ancient tradition of the ceramic art.
In 1991 Lorenzo Cascio created the magnificent bronze door for the church of St. George
in Portofino: “the Door of Salvation” which, in six high relief panels, represents the story of sin from
the beginning of the world to the present time on one side, and the story of redemption on the other.
In 1994 he worked at the bronze altar for the church dedicated to St. Anthony in Boccadasse,
Genova.
In 1995 he sculptured in eight high relief panels in golden bronze the door representing
“the Mountains of the Bible” for the church of Nozarego in Santa Margherita Ligure.
In year of 2002 he was called to realize the sculpture “L’ABBRACCIO” for the main square of
Montevago, Sicily. The artwork represents a warrior embracing his bride, thus symbolizing the
fighting spirit which joins the men and women of Sicily who, through love and labour, prepare
a better future in the respect of the family values.
In 2003 Lorenzo Cascio created “THE ARRIVAL”, a sculpture for the MUSEO DEI CAMPIONISSIMI
of Novi Ligure to place in the museum drive.
He used these words to describe his work:
“I imagined in my sculpture the cross of the finishing line of a group of eight champions.
I intended, through the sculptural dynamism, to pass on the climax of the race, the perfect
symbiosis of the man and his bicycle, which in the plastic representation become a whole.
I represented in my work the strength of the true champions who, with their sports sacrifice
left us a priceless moral heritage”.
Lorenzo Cascio in his career portrayed in bronze famous people of the cultural and artistic world ;
scientist, President of the Italian Republic Giovanni Leone (1965), painter Giorgio De Chirico (1973),
Albert Sabin (1987), Admiral Durand de la Penne (1993), Pope John Paul II (1998) during his visit
to the Curia of Chiavari and many others.
His works have been featured in many museums, artistic collections, and religious and public

Bio
Jaeyoun Yoo, a Korean artist, captures the ongoing story of ordinary life through modern fantasy; using cartoonish forms, her painted clay sculptures remark upon the blasé concerns of everyday people. Rather than sending a pre-constructed message, Yoo shapes her art with storytelling through visual expression, capturing the saga of the modern world through spontaneous techniques. Yoo sometimes builds clay and sometimes carves it out in order to stay true to the natural, varying characteristics of the clay itself. In her art, Yoo constructs a fantastical, recurring character named Mr. Kim, whose generosity and exaggerated features instill her work simultaneously with humor and imagination. As Kim uses fantasy to express the nature of reality, her art speaks to the people in this world who are tired of the mundane--through her art, they can encounter themselves in its extraordinary vision. Yoo received her BFA from Chungang University in ceramics, and is now an instructor at Kyungin Women’s College.

Visual Interaction in the abstract space
Seunghun Lee, Cyart research institute
Eunyoung Cho, the artist presenting the internal reflection of human through the harmony of human body and abstract space with malerisch formativeness, holds this exhibition to suggest some distinctive changes. the basic approach starting from physical tense of specific pose toward abstract space is consistent but the abstract has been expanded further. while in former works the abstractness has played a supporting role as background, its significance gets grown in this exhibition.
This abstract space is created by diffusing from the shadowed human body like dark hair to eventually absorbed to the space of deep darkness under strong contrast of light and shade when the light dropped from the body passes every valley of body to reach the space. the body exists as a channel toward the darkness. The specific pose also works as a guide for viewer’s eye to be attracted to the deep darkness of strong abstract space. Unlike realistic descreiption on surface of human body, the delicate changes in feeling of color of the abstract space make it more dreamlike, inrealistic one under strong contrast of light and shade.
With eyes following the stream from the back of body to the shadow, the artist induces the viewer to experience visual enlightenment as if there seems vague demarcation of a reality and virtual reality through strong contrast of realistic human body and abstract space. this space expanding from the body disappears but leaves in only dark colors and a piece of drawing, letting us feel new prospect of purity. Compared to the former works which has equivalent allocation between human body and abstract space, the artist makes the viewer’s eye drawn deeply into the world of unreality with sensuousness.
This world of unreality seems to indicate relevance with internal reflection rather than routine terms in real life. closely looking into the brushstrokes in the abstract space of the pieces, it is found that those are unique traces from the artist’s own life. They seem a piece of huge sentimental waves or the wreckage of internal chaos. His abstract space in each work remains a repository and a scene of every gesture from such internal perturbation.
Especially in this exhibition, there can be found specific characters or signs in the abstract space but hard to figure out their implication, It seems to suggest how to present the internal reflection of the artist. In other words, with vague symbols floating in the abstract space like a sort of monologue, the artist carefully delivers her intention to speak out as well as secrets its referential or clear meaning.
There is nobody without hard time or secrets to hide from others. such memories or experiences have inconsistency to be disclosed but concealed at the same time and it causes intense confusion in mind. As an exit to relieve such internal panic, the artist is seemes to find his works playing in the interaction with someone outside.
By sharing the story behind images in shadowy back of human body, the artist would try to interact with the viewers about the would beyond the reality. While presenting dark shadow and debris from the back of the body, it seems to suggest the most strong and clear message about the artist;s inside even though there is no specific figure such as any physical pose or expression. The artist might know that the abstract space is not for specific content but for clear message about the internal reflection and the chosen approach is the best way to share her ideas with the world.
By expressing her internal chaos, the artist might try to heal herself but yet the reason she has shown strong will to communicate with others lies in universality of internal agony which every human has during his or her life. Every person has different life and problems but there is no one without difficulties. That’s the reason why the artist keeps addressing.
Vague signals in the abstract space such a mutter no one can hear or a sound out of linguistic structure are born in the artist’s own experience but every viewer can find his or her own story in them. It would be unconventional experience to reflect out own life and learn how to interact in nonverbal way.

The Patented Art _ Breathing Metalism
Kim, Young Ho Art Critic | Art Historian
A phenomenon, intensified in the current art world is the fusion of genres and the utilization of diverse methods. The boundary between industrial production and sculpture, and design and painting has fallen down, and it is now more common that an artist combines various mediums and methods to create an artwork. The interest toward genre fusion and combination is a product of the changes of public orders in 1960s. From the perspective of art realm, the pure intrinsic in modem art emerged after pop art has lost its effect Although this genre breakdown phenomenon confused classical arc concepts, it revived the nature of dynamic art, and also contributed to close adhesion of art to life.
In this case of Mr. Lee, the barrier between practical art and fine art has broken down, and the use of dynamic methods and mediums is well represented in his artworks, not only within the current ones, but also within the past ones exhibited in Korea National Art exhibition and, Korea National Industrial Art Exhibition in 1970s. Even within the framework of practical use, the aesthetic value is strongly displayed through the structure, material, and space sense. His several three dimensional pieces are as distinctive as sculpture, and even in somewhat less numbered flat artworks, audiences recognize its artistic quality as well as decorative art. He further succeeded in the realm of environmental formative art with his extraordinary artistic sense.
The fusion of genres and dynamic methods of forming within Mr. Lee’s artworks contribute to strengthening his hidden passion for unrestricted expression and artistic ability. This is why his past works imply the liberalism through the titles and methods. The first, his title has no limitation, ranged from objects in nature such as a tree branch a flower to an abstractive figure. Even in method wise he did not limit himself to take advantage of wood, metal alone or have a synergetic effect of stone and metal through either a welding process or a laser cutting technique. Ultimately he resulted in inventing a metal transforming method with air pressure.
The series of pressured metal works in this exhibition is what Mr. Lee would like the viewers to pay most attention to, because after all this invention is what has provoked his hidden desire and encouraged him to open a gallery after the 30 years of silence. When double-layered metals and welded edges meet an air compressor, it becomes expanded like a balloon, and transforms into a pillow or a cushion the power of an air compressor that transforms a metal with a thickness of 1.6mm into a thickness of a paper surpasses our imagination and expectation. With this technique, the artist himself manufactured cubic shaped or chair shaped artworks, and continued further experimentation by broadening his range with a production of a traditional wrapping-cloth formed flat piece.
Evaluating air pressured art pieces in this exhibition in terms of title, whether it is inspired by an animal, a face, the nature or by a spiral, cubic, wavy abstractive figure, the artist carries on his creativity even in naming a title. His intention of applying a new theme to his art resulted in producing a wine table, a gate, furthermore a musical instrument such as a guitar or a Gayageum, a Korean classic musical instrument In his work process, the air compressor not only expands the metal, but also fortifies its shape and structure. This process is equivalent to the scientific method of how the nature transforms an ostrich egg.
Mr. Lee’s metal process brings out diverse views toward its aesthetic analysis. The most noticeable analysis among them is what is called “visual lightness in heavy metals", which confuses the classical analysis of mechanism. In fact, contrary to die heavy feeling of metals, the lightness, resulted from this process offers visual enjoyment to the audiences. The weight of stainless steel and a metallic plate happens to be distorted in this air-compressing process, and becomes blended with this ductile quality that such an aluminum foil consists of. This third accidental factor in the whole procedure adds more excitement into the analysis. In order to intensify the interrelationship between the lightness and heaviness, he manages to generate a new strategy of surrounding the artwork with a stone or a rock that is covered with an iron net structure.
Another way to interpret his metal process technique is named, “contingent and variable image of metal surface". Double layered metals air expansion is an accidental phenomenon derived from another causal of particular metal surface distortion. Metamorphosis happens to be witnessed even in the case initiated with an already cubic shaped metal. In the instance of choosing stainless steel in the air expansion, this metamorphosed surface becomes to have a mirror effect of reflecting the surrounds. This is a very interesting phenomenon because depending on where this artwork is placed, it would contain images of other objects as well on its surfaces. This mirror quality of the artwork possesses distinctive energy that may be used as a tool to interconnect between art and viewers.
As seen so far, visual lightness and the accidental variability, derived from Mr. Lee's work technique represent a new meaning in the world of art. This lightness and variability are qualities that were restrained in the era of modernism. However the act of accepting these qualities back into the artwork explains the modified standard on art criticism, and this standard an art critic pleasantly to Mr. Lee’s works is the true outcome of his continuous tenacity and effort. Without the full understanding of materials and controlled operation, this whole metal air comprising procedure would not have been invented in the first place. Even though Mr. Lee decides to present this technique in public now, he has been using this technique for more than 10 years so far. Especially the property to expand the metal with the solar heat is discovered in the process of welding square metal engraving pipes. In the end, his enduring effort is compensated with the government patent on his invention.
From the marketing perspective, Mr. Lee's works are patented art. This patent named, "aesthetic metamorphosis of metal by air compression” protects his works against copyright infringement The reason for the artist to hold a patent implies how easy it is for others to imitate his works. All he needs in the whole complete work process is the air compressor. However as previously stated, to accomplish this invention he needed long life experiences and experimentations with metals, and the government apparently agreed on this.
The implication within an artwork can be different, depending on viewers. Not only due to space and time, but also to the viewer's intellectual background and experiences, the meaning within the art piece could be controversial. Nevertheless when the quality of work is extraordinary, viewers hold a consistent comment Mr. Lee’s works surpass the simplicity of visual lightness and accidental variability, and carries the potential to extend into other art fields as well. And this potentiality is the outcome birthed from the course of dissolving the practical art into the fine art. When his liberal attitude and manner toward the formative arts draw a link to contemporary life, the value created in his art will be further recognized.
